Remixed fairy tales are so much fun to read, and they’re just as fun to write!

Below I’ve made a list of a few well-known fairy tales and three different ways you could remix them. Feel free to use a lesser-known fairy tale or mythology to really make this your own.
Fairy Tales
- Pandora’s Box
- Little Red Riding Hood
- Sleeping Beauty
- King Arthur
- Cinderella
- Snow White
- Hansel & Gretel
- The Little Mermaid
- Bluebeard
- The Frog Prince
Remix #1: Genre
After choosing one of the fairy tales above, rewrite it in one of the following genres:
- Science Fiction
- Forensic Crime Thriller
- Dystopia
- Comedy
- Western
- Gothic Horror
Remix #2: Setting
Try rewriting your chosen fairy tale in one of the following settings:
- World War II
- Zombie Apocalypse
- Another Planet
- Gym Class
- New York City
- A Fast Food Restaurant
Remix #3: Characters
The third remix is to play with the characters:
- Tell the story from the point of view of the villain.
- Tell the story from the point of view of one of the minor characters.
- Swap the gender of the main character.
There are lots of remixed fairy tales out there already! A few examples include Cinder by Marissa Meyer (Cinderella set in space), Hunted by Megan Spooner (Beauty and the Beast set in Russia), and Briar Rose by Jane Yolen (Sleeping Beauty set in World War II), Snow White: A Graphic Novel by Matt Phelan (Snow White as a 1920’s noir). The possibilities are endless!
If you post the completed prompt on your blog, feel free to add a link in the comments! Happy writing!
Very good writing prompt idea! I need an extra day per week, all to myself, for writing!
